Syrian regime planned kidnapping of US journalist Austin Tice

New investigations by the BBC and NPR have revealed that the kidnapping of American journalist Austin Tice in Syria in 2012 was a calculated operation planned over several weeks, rather than an opportunistic encounter at a checkpoint.

Evidence from secret Syrian intelligence files and interviews with former regime members indicate that Tice was targeted while reporting on the Syrian civil war. A member of the National Defense Force, a militia loyal to the Assad regime, claimed the abduction was sanctioned by then-President Bashar al-Assad.

The operation reportedly involved Tice’s own driver, who provided information to regime officials. While some former commanders have suggested Tice was executed, his remains have not been found, and his ultimate fate remains a subject of intense international scrutiny.
