Syrian regime remnants regroup in Lebanon as Israel enters Syria

Following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, remnants of the former Syrian state apparatus are reportedly attempting to reorganize outside of Syria. Many military officers, security personnel, and officials have fled across the border into Lebanon, utilizing both official crossings and illegal routes, with some settling in areas such as Akkar, the Bekaa Valley, Beirut, and the southern suburbs. While some fled to avoid prosecution for past human rights abuses, there are indications that these individuals are forming networks for communication, funding, and training to reconstitute parts of the former system.

Concurrently, an Israeli military officer has provided details regarding the Israeli Defense Forces' response to the regime's fall. In a recent podcast, a Major serving in the 595th Field Intelligence and Collection Battalion described ‘Operation Bashan,’ a rapid mobilization completed in under 24 hours. The operation involved entering Syrian territory to secure strategic sites and prevent a security vacuum. The officer noted that the battalion's mission shifted from monitoring the border to conducting intelligence operations deep within Syrian territory to provide early warnings and broader situational awareness.
