Syria's Central Bank Ends Currency Exchange Deadline, Starts Old Note Withdrawal

The Central Bank of Syria announced that the deadline for exchanging old Syrian banknotes expired on 30 July 2026. From 31 July 2026 the old notes will lose legal tender status and will no longer be accepted for any financial transactions.

Starting that same day, a five‑year withdrawal programme will be run exclusively by the central bank in Damascus. Requests must involve at least 100 notes of any denomination; smaller requests will be rejected. Approved exchanges will be credited to the holder’s account in the new Syrian pound without any fees, commissions, taxes or other charges.

The bank also clarified that, from 31 July 2026, the term “Syrian pound” in all official documents will refer to the new currency. It urges the public to follow official channels for information and avoid rumors. The deadline extension of 30 days, announced in May, was the last adjustment before the final cut‑off.
