Syria's New President Pursues Security Deal with Israel Amid Turkish Influence

President Ahmed al‑Sharaa of Syria, meeting UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres, announced his willingness to negotiate a security agreement with Israel, describing it as a possible catalyst for lasting regional stability. The talks aim to involve neighboring countries and address broader security concerns in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Turkey has entrenched its influence in post‑Assad Syria. One and a half years after the fall of the Assad regime, Ankara remains a key player in Syrian politics, reconstruction, security and relations with Israel. Turkish language, signage, currency and infrastructure persist in northern provinces such as Afrin, Jarabulus and Azaz, underscoring Turkey’s continued role in Syria’s governance and economic recovery.
