Syria's reconstruction leaves disabled behind, report shows
A new report by Handicap International finds that more than 28 % of Syrians who rely on humanitarian aid have a disability. People with disabilities are largely excluded from post‑war reconstruction because many hospitals and schools are not built to be accessible.
Only 57 % of Syrian hospitals are fully functional and over half of the health workforce has fled the country, leaving a severe shortage of rehabilitation specialists outside major cities. Between December 2024 and May 2026, 2,288 victims of mines and unexploded ordnance were recorded, including 808 deaths and 1,477 injuries, many of them children. An estimated 14.1 million Syrians remain at risk from explosive remnants.
In education, just 41 % of the schools surveyed meet basic accessibility standards and more than 60 % of school‑age children with severe disabilities have never attended school, highlighting a major gap in inclusive education.
