SYRIZA and New Left pursue parliamentary cooperation amid fragmented Greek left

Greek opposition parties SYRIZA and the New Left are exploring joint parliamentary actions despite growing distances among the splintered left. Ongoing talks on a broader left re‑organisation have not produced a formal alliance, and the recently dissolved cooperation with Laïká Éntaxi (LAE) has further strained relations.

In the parliament, 19 MPs from SYRIZA and former New Left members co‑signed a question concerning the “Nobody Alone – Care for All” platform launched by the Attica Regional Government to monitor residents of the refugee camp on Alexandra Avenue. The initiative highlighted concerns over missing social and economic criteria for housing assistance. Notably, SYRIZA MP Nina Kasimati did not sign the document, a detail attracting political attention. SYRIZA’s parliamentary group leader Rena Dourou was elected on 18 July, underscoring internal leadership changes as the left seeks coordinated action.

The discussions illustrate the difficulty of reconciling personal networks, party leaderships, and policy priorities within Greece’s fragmented opposition left.
