SYRIZA and PASOK compete for leadership of the Greek opposition

SYRIZA and PASOK are intensifying their competition to establish themselves as the primary political alternative to New Democracy in Greece. Recent GPO polling indicates SYRIZA holds 15.8% of the vote, while PASOK follows at 13.1%, a 2.7 percentage point difference.

Following the Thessaloniki International Fair (DETh), both parties are focusing on demonstrating their readiness to govern through comprehensive programs and political personnel. Alexis Tsipras has expressed his readiness to serve as Prime Minister again, emphasizing the need for a unified leftist governmental alternative. Meanwhile, PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis maintains a goal of securing first place, asserting that his party possesses a complete program and independence from special interests.

The political landscape is also being shaped by internal movements, such as the departure of Rosa Bretou from PASOK to join SYRIZA.
