Syriza appoints new secretary and political planning chief amid parliamentary group shake‑up

The Greek opposition party Syriza is reorganising its leadership structure following the resignation of former party leader Sokratis Famellos. Party insiders say Nikos Papas will become the new party secretary, with Natasa Gkara as his deputy, while Pavlos Polakis has been named secretary for Political Planning. In the communications wing, Dimitris Melidis will serve as press representative and Giorgos Panagiotopoulos joins the team.

At the same time, Syriza’s remaining parliamentary members are set to vote early tomorrow to elect a new president of its parliamentary group. The vote, scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. in the parliament’s Hall 150, will determine the size of the group ahead of upcoming national elections. The party has experienced a wave of MP defections and resignations, with several members leaving the parliamentary group and the Central Committee in recent days, prompting internal criticism and calls for unity.

The internal reshuffle reflects ongoing disputes within Syriza over its direction and alliances, with senior figures warning against dissolution and emphasizing the need to uphold democratic and progressive values.
