SYRIZA Central Committee Convenes to Decide Party’s Future Amid Internal Split

The central committee of Greece’s SYRIZA party met in a hotel in Athens, a session described as pivotal for the party’s survival. Delegates debated two opposing courses: an autonomous continuation or coordinated cooperation with Alekos Tsipras’s new Greek Left alliance. The proposal put forward by Socrates Famellos, which received a broad majority, calls for political support of the Greek Left Alliance and rejects a solitary “autonomous” path.

Key figures voiced the internal tension. Pavlos Polakis urged the party to “say no to self‑dissolution and yes to coordinated cooperation,” warning against fragmentation. He also questioned the party’s relevance, asking, “I don’t understand, aren’t we with the needs of society?” Nikos Papap emphasised the need for a unified progressive pole against New Democracy, while also calling for dialogue with other left‑wing actors, citing former minister Nikos Kotzias as an example of diplomatic success. The meeting underscored a decisive moment as SYRIZA seeks to reshape its strategy and maintain relevance in Greece’s political landscape.
