SYRIZA Central Committee faces internal split over alliance with Tsipras' Greek Left

The SYRIZA central committee met to decide the party’s stance toward the Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) launched by former prime minister Alexis Tsipras. Party president Sokratis Famellos urged political support for the alliance, warning that “it would be a strategic mistake to confront the party of Alexis Tsipras” and emphasizing the need for unity within the progressive space.

A rival faction led by Pavlos Polakis and Nikos Papa argued for an autonomous electoral path, demanding a dedicated ballot‑paper committee and a clear timetable. They highlighted SYRIZA’s poor poll numbers (around 1.5%). Renowned member Rena Dourou proposed forming a special committee to draft cooperation proposals for Tsipras, PASOK and other progressive forces. The meeting’s outcome will shape SYRIZA’s strategy for the upcoming elections.
