SYRIZA claims cost of living crisis can be addressed with political will

SYRIZA officials held a press briefing to argue that the rising cost of living in Greece can be addressed through political will. The party presented data claiming that the Mitsotakis government’s policies favor rising prices.

Key points presented by the party include:

• Fuel Costs: Data suggests Greek citizens pay the highest percentage of their income for gasoline compared to other EU nations. The excise tax on gasoline reaches approximately 70 cents per liter, which is 95% higher than the European minimum, suggesting a potential reduction of 34.1 cents per liter.

• Heating Oil: In mid-September, Greece reportedly had the highest heating oil prices among 14 EU countries, exceeding the Eurozone average.

• Energy and Refineries: The party highlighted a significant increase in refinery profits over the last five years and noted that electricity prices from the Public Power Corporation (PPC) have risen by 53% since 2019, which they attribute to the effects of privatization.
