SYRIZA debates coalition with Tsipras' EL.A.S. in critical 48‑hour meeting

Greek opposition party SYRIZA entered a decisive 48‑hour period, holding meetings of its Political Secretariat and Central Committee to decide whether to run together with Alexandros Tsipras' party EL.A.S. in the next national election.

Party leader Sokratis Famellos pushed for an electoral alliance, arguing it would create a united progressive front. His proposal was backed by a majority in the Political Secretariat, but faced strong resistance from members including Nikos Papapetrou, Pavlos Polakis, Rena Douro and others who advocated for an independent SYRIZA candidacy. The Central Committee vote split, with nine members rejecting Famellos' plan and a larger faction supporting the coalition.

The internal dispute highlighted deep divisions within SYRIZA over its future orientation and whether to align with the Greek Left Alliance led by Tsipras. The outcome of the meetings is expected to shape the party's strategy ahead of upcoming elections.
