SYRIZA endorses Alexis Tsipras' new ELAS party after internal vote

The political secretariat of Greece's SYRIZA party approved a proposal from party figure Socrates Famellos to support the newly formed ELAS party led by former prime minister Alexis Tsipras. George Siakantaris, a senior SYRIZA strategist, praised the decision, calling the endorsement “very positive” and highlighting the potential inclusion of SYRIZA officials in the new initiative.

During the same period, SYRIZA’s Central Committee held a heated session to discuss the proposal. Party president Socrates Famellos argued that the creation of ELAS represents a major political development and should not be treated as a rival, stressing the need for progressive unity against the current government. Members expressed broad support for collaborating with ELAS in upcoming elections, aiming for a joint progressive ticket rather than competing lists.
