SYRIZA endorses alliance with Alexis Tsipras' new Greek Left party

The Central Committee of Greece's SYRIZA party held an extensive session in which leader Sokratis Famellos rejected alternative proposals from party figures Pavlos Polakis, Nikos Pappas and Rena Dourou. Instead, he championed and secured a decisive vote—about 75 % in favour—to back political cooperation with former prime minister Alexis Tsipras' newly founded party, the Greek Left Alliance. The proposal was presented as the only viable path for the progressive camp ahead of upcoming elections, dismissing any “plan B”.

Famellos emphasized the need for a broad, united left front to challenge the current government, while critics within SYRIZA warned against any loss of party autonomy. The meeting underscored deep internal tensions but concluded with a clear strategic direction toward a unified left-wing coalition.
