SYRIZA faces internal split as leaders debate party’s future

SYRIZA chairman Sokratis Famellos’ recent intervention in the party’s Central Committee sparked controversy. Deputy Paulos Polakis warned that the real dilemma is whether SYRIZA will continue to exist, calling for a “coordinated course” and urging the inclusion of ELAS and other left‑wing groups such as New Left and MeRA25 to discuss a cooperation programme. Opposition figure Andreas Drymios labeled Famellos’ decision to dissolve SYRIZA a “mistake”, questioning whether it was discussed with former prime minister Alexis Tsipras. Drymios warned that without Tsipras’ backing the move could trigger a “mass exodus” from PASOK if it falls to third or fourth place in upcoming elections, and warned of potential internal violence. Both commentators highlighted deep divisions within Greece’s main left‑wing party and the uncertainty surrounding its electoral strategy.
