SYRIZA faces internal split over cooperation with Alexis Tsipras

SYRIZA’s Central Committee gathered to decide the party’s future direction amid a sharp internal dispute. Sokratis Famellos urged support for former prime‑minister Alexis Tsipras’ initiative with the Greek Left Alliance (EL AS), calling opposition to it a “strategic mistake.” In contrast, senior members such as Pa ulos Polakis, Nikos Papapas and Rena Dourou argue the party should either run a united list in upcoming elections or, failing that, launch an independent slate against Tsipras.

The debate reflects a broader power struggle within SYRIZA, with factions aligning either behind Tsipras’ left‑wing coalition or pushing for a distinct SYRIZA‑led ticket. Famellos also criticised the government’s handling of constitutional reforms, social justice issues and alleged cronyism, framing the party’s stance as essential for a strong opposition to the current Mitsotakis administration.
