SYRIZA faces leadership tensions as Pavlos Polakis skips Thessaloniki event

Internal tensions are rising within the Greek political party SYRIZA. Member of Parliament Pavlos Polakis has declined to participate in the party’s delegation to the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) on September 10 and 11. This decision follows his absence from a recent electoral committee meeting, signaling potential friction regarding the party's leadership and future strategic planning.

While Rena Dourou serves as the President of the Parliamentary Group and Nikos Pappas acts as the party secretary, Polakis has reportedly expressed interest in seeking leadership through a convention or direct vote. Currently, the Dourou-Polakis-Pappas faction appears to favor maintaining the existing status quo without immediate internal elections.

Simultaneously, Rena Dourou has emphasized the party’s shift toward active opposition. She highlighted SYRIZA’s legislative efforts, such as a proposal to regulate private debt through social criteria rather than investment funds, and criticized the government’s economic decisions, including the early repayment of certain debts.
