SYRIZA Parliamentary Leader Rena Dourou Meets Thessaloniki Mayor on Funding and Autonomy

Rena Dourou, head of the SYRIZA‑Progressive Alliance parliamentary group, met with Thessaloniki Mayor Stelios Aggeloudis in the city hall. The two discussed the challenges facing the municipality, stressing that local authorities lack sufficient financial resources to fulfil their duties. Dourou criticised the national government for applying what she described as a “revived 1990s neoliberal framework” that creates an “asphyxiating environment” for local governance, and she called for stronger institutional support and funding.

The conversation also touched on the city’s participation in the International Thessaloniki Exhibition and on the ongoing debate over water privatisation, referencing the 2014 public referendum on the issue. Aggeloudis welcomed Dourou’s visit, underscoring the need for coordinated action between the central and local levels to address the city’s development needs.
