Greek opposition parties criticize Mitsotakis over economic claims

Greek opposition parties have launched a wave of criticism following a Sunday social media post by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The political backlash focuses on several key areas, including private debt, the cost of living, energy policy, and foreign relations.

PASOK-Kίνημα Αλλαγής criticized the government's handling of private debt, specifically regarding changes to the extrajudicial mechanism. Party spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas argued that the new regulations could put debtors in a worse position by allowing the seizure of remaining assets and noting that funds are not obligated to participate in the platform. Nikos Androulakis further accused the government of a lack of concrete plans to protect households from rising energy costs.

SYRIZA-PS accused the Prime Minister of describing a version of Greece that is disconnected from the reality experienced by citizens. The party called for immediate measures to reduce fuel taxes and proposed capping refinery profit margins. They also raised questions regarding the government's strategy on Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue.

Additionally, Alexis Tsipras, via an interview with Marianne, criticized the economic situation, stating that the average Greek must work excessive hours to survive despite official growth figures. He characterized the current economic climate as having ‘Bulgarian wages, French prices, and Chinese working conditions’ and urged for a shift toward productive sectors like agriculture and industry rather than relying solely on tourism and real estate.
