SYRIZA-PS submits private debt reform bill to Greek Parliament

The SYRIZA-PS opposition party has submitted a comprehensive bill to the Greek Parliament aimed at managing private debt. The proposal seeks to repeal the current bankruptcy law established by the New Democracy government and reinstate the Katseli law to provide protection for primary residences.

Key components of the bill include the establishment of an automated settlement process where creditors must respond within 15 days. Debt repayment would be structured over up to 25 years with low interest rates, calculated based on the debtor's actual income and reasonable living expenses. Additionally, the bill proposes that judicial protection be automatically and cost-free if out-of-court settlement attempts fail.

A central element of the proposal is the creation of a Development Bank. This institution would be empowered to purchase non-performing loans from investment funds and restructure them to benefit citizens and businesses. SYRIZA-PS argues that this would prevent funds from demanding full repayment on loans purchased at a fraction of their value, ensuring a portion of the difference is returned to the debtor through debt reduction.
