Greek Super Fund transfer confirmed under Syriza government
Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou told parliament that the Syriza administration was the first Greek government to accept the transfer of the entire public‑asset portfolio to the so‑called Super Fund (Υπερταμείο). Earlier administrations led by George Papandreou and by Antonis Samaras‑Vangelis Venizelos had rejected the creditors’ demand to move state assets. The loan memoranda required the handover of 61 % of the water utility EYDAP and 51 % of the electricity transmission operator EYATH to the earlier TAIPED vehicle, whose stated aim was to sell those stakes. The Super Fund replaced TAIPED, retained only about 11 % of EYDAP’s water supply, and performed an evaluation of the assets. A Council of State ruling later declared the majority transfer of EYDAP and EYATH shares to the Super Fund unconstitutional. Papastavrou also noted that the transfer included cultural monuments such as Knossos and Phaistos, describing the episode as a “black page” in Greece’s negotiations.
