Syros rescue worker murder prompts arrests and criminal charges

A 41‑year‑old EKAB rescue worker was killed after confronting a couple in Upper Syros on 23 July. Video from security cameras shows the victim arriving at the house with a mask, gloves and a bag containing an air‑gun and a knife. An argument escalated, the victim was stabbed in the back and later died of the wound despite emergency treatment.

Police arrested the 41‑year‑old male suspect and, after a joint interrogation, also detained his 30‑year‑old partner for complicity. Prosecutors have filed a charge of lethal bodily injury against the man and a charge of joint participation for his partner. A three‑hour crime‑scene reconstruction was carried out on 25 July; the suspect and his partner gave consistent statements, supporting their claim that they acted in self‑defence during an attempted robbery.

Investigators continue to examine the motive – the victim may have been seeking unpaid rent or attempting a robbery – and are analysing digital evidence, forensic material and the video recordings. The case remains under pre‑investigation, with the suspects scheduled to appear before a magistrate.
