System of a Down marks 25th anniversary of ‘Toxicity’ album

The heavy metal band System of a Down is marking the 25th anniversary of their landmark second album, ‘Toxicity’, which was originally released in September 2001 through American Recordings.

Originally composed largely by Daron Malakian in his childhood bedroom, the album is noted for its complex fusion of genres, including alternative metal, nu metal, thrash, and progressive metal, alongside Middle Eastern scales and folk influences. The band’s creative output during this period was exceptionally high, resulting in over 30 songs, some of which were later released on the 2002 compilation ‘Steal This Album!’.

To commemorate the anniversary, the group has prepared special vinyl and CD editions. The album’s legacy is defined by its ability to balance extreme musical diversity with melodic hooks and the distinct vocal range of Serj Tankian, which moves between rap, melodic singing, and aggressive growls.
