System76 launches Pop!_OS 20.04 and COSMIC 1.4.0 desktop update

System76 released Pop!_OS version 20.04, built on Ubuntu LTS. The update adds a Windows‑inspired tiling window manager, expanded multi‑workspace support, Flatpak repositories in the Pop!_Shop, a hybrid graphics mode that switches between Intel and Nvidia GPUs on laptops, a firmware manager for automatic device updates, and the ability to install version upgrades offline. Minimum hardware requirements are 2 GB RAM, 16 GB storage and a 64‑bit processor.

The same day the company published COSMIC Desktop 1.4.0 (code‑named “Epoch”). The new release improves the system‑monitor app with CPU/GPU utilization, speed and temperature graphs and a right‑click quit option, refines kiosk‑mode handling, adds volume‑step configuration, fixes VPN credential prompts after NetworkManager restarts, and enhances HiDPI scaling. It also expands compatibility with non‑systemd init systems and resolves several bugs affecting fullscreen games, MTP file transfers, trash detection and UI flicker.

Both releases aim to strengthen System76’s Linux ecosystem for desktop and gaming users.
