systemd 262 released with static PID 1 and Intel TDX support

The systemd project has released version 262 of its system and service manager, a core component used by most major Linux distributions. The release, tagged on September 22, 2026, introduces several architectural and security enhancements.

A major highlight is the ability to build systemd as a single, statically linked PID 1 and executor binary. This feature is designed to facilitate the use of systemd within extremely small container environments by reducing dependency on external dynamic libraries.

Other key technical updates include: • Support for Intel TDX via systemd-vmspawn to enable confidential virtual machines. • Enhanced TPM security, including the ability to use Argon2id for key derivation from TPM2 PINs. • Improved resilience through the ability to recover valid entries from corrupted active journal files. • New management features such as 'RestartRandomizedDelaySec=' and 'ActivatingConcurrencyMax='. • Integration of fallback unit files directly into the service manager to ensure functionality if disk-based files are unreadable.
