Systemic Pesticides Linked to Global Bee Colony Collapse
Pesticides and herbicides are essential to modern agriculture, but their chemical properties determine how they move through soil, water, air and food. Since the late 1980s, systemic pesticides—applied to seeds or seedlings and absorbed throughout the plant—have become widespread in large‑scale farming.
Research and documentary evidence show that low‑level residues from these chemicals reach foraging bees, accumulate in hives, and impair bee immune and nervous systems. The resulting weakness makes colonies vulnerable to parasites and disorientation, leading to colony‑collapse disorder (CCD). Studies in France and other countries report that eliminating systemic pesticides allows bee populations to recover, especially where organic farming is practiced.
The issue raises concerns for regulators, agrochemical firms such as Monsanto, and the food supply that depends on pollination.
