SYVIC launches initiative to explore AI's role in government

SYVIC, a U.S. civic-technology initiative, has launched a public participation program to explore the potential role of artificial intelligence in government. The initiative uses the provocative question, “Could AI be president?”, to facilitate discussions on how technology might help governments better understand citizen priorities and facilitate communication between election cycles.

The program is exploratory in nature, aiming to identify how AI could help people make their voices heard without relying solely on traditional engagement channels. SYVIC representatives noted that the goal is not to suggest AI has all the answers, but to investigate if technology can help clarify where populations agree or differ. The initiative acknowledges significant challenges regarding fairness, accountability, privacy, and oversight in any potential application of AI within government systems.
