Szczebrzeszyn activists criticize local government over inaction

The Patriotyczny Szczebrzeszyn association has issued a sharp critique of the local government in Szczebrzeszyn, accusing the Mayor and City Council of inaction and a lack of political will regarding sensitive historical and diplomatic issues.

A primary grievance involves the failure to pass resolutions to terminate partnership agreements with the Ukrainian towns of Zvirka and Mykolaiv. Despite previous assurances from the Mayor that such steps would be taken in July, no action has been taken by the end of August. The association criticized proposals for the Mayor to personally travel to Ukraine to re-establish contact, labeling such moves as unnecessary risks and costs when formal resolutions would suffice.

Additionally, the association criticized the City Council for its handling of historical memory, specifically regarding the victims of the OUN and UPA, as well as the commemoration of Jewish residents murdered during the Reinhardt action. Activists described council sessions as a ‘local cabaret’ focused on trivial matters and power struggles while ignoring significant historical responsibilities.
