Szeged Biological Research Centre researchers propose new strategy for artificial tissue models

Researchers from the Szeged Biological Research Centre (SZBK), part of the Hungarian Research Network (HUN-REN), have published a strategic roadmap for the future of artificial tissue modeling. In a study published in Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, Ákos Diósdi, Péter Horváth, and Fabian J. Theiss have outlined a direction for the international research community regarding 3D-oid systems, such as organoids and assembloids.

These miniature, organ-like structures mimic the functions of real human tissues. The researchers aim to move beyond simply creating more complex models toward establishing standardized and reproducible platforms. By improving the understanding of intercellular communication and complex biological processes through these models, the scientific community can accelerate research, reduce costs, and potentially decrease the necessity for animal testing.

Successful standardization of these 3D-oid platforms could impact various sectors, from basic research to industrial drug development, ultimately bringing science closer to creating artificial tissues and organs for therapeutic use.
