Szeged court rules in favor of reopening Wesley János school

The Szeged Court of Appeal has issued a final ruling overturning a government decision to close the Wesley János Kindergarten, Primary School, and High School. The court declared the government office's previous decision unfounded and ordered a new procedure to be conducted.

The school, maintained by the Hungarian Evangelical Brotherhood (MET), had its operating license revoked in August 2024, shortly before the start of the school year. The Esélyteremtő Wesley Public Benefit Foundation had attempted to take over the institution's operation, but the government office rejected this request, citing sufficient capacity in other institutions.

The court noted that the ministry's assessment was insufficient, as it relied on general statistical data regarding capacity without specifically addressing the needs of students with special educational requirements (SNI) who attended the school. The institution primarily served disadvantaged children and those with special needs.

MET and the Esélyteremtő Wesley Foundation are working together to prepare the school for reopening during the 2027/28 academic year, aiming to provide a safe and integrated developmental environment for former and future students.
