Szeged fire crews battle surge of blazes during heatwave

During a third‑degree heat alert, fire services in Szeged and the surrounding Csongrád‑Csanád county dealt with a marked increase in fires. Outdoor fires broke out at several locations, including a two‑hectare blaze on Kertész Street, a half‑hectare vegetation fire near Régi Posta Street, and brush fires in Baktó and nearby fields. An agricultural machine caught fire in Szentes, and a chimney draft blockage risk was noted as a cause of indoor smoke accumulation.

Carbon‑monoxide detectors also alarmed in a residential apartment, prompting rapid response, but no injuries were reported. Authorities emphasized that the extreme temperatures can turn minor oversights—such as a discarded cigarette or debris in a chimney—into larger fires, urging residents to exercise heightened caution.

The fire department deployed multiple units and water streams to contain the incidents, successfully extinguishing all reported blazes without casualties.
