Hungary legal updates: Slavery death appeal and mausoleum murder plot

Several high-profile criminal cases and legal proceedings are unfolding across Hungary.

In a major human rights case, prosecutors in Debrecen have appealed the sentencing of a couple who held a 34-year-old woman in slavery. The woman died following months of starvation, physical abuse with stun devices and rolling pins, and forced labor. While the Nyíregyháza Regional Court initially sentenced the man to 14 years and the woman to 10 years for bodily harm causing death, human trafficking, and forced labor, prosecutors are now seeking a life sentence for the man, requesting the charges be upgraded to murder committed with particular cruelty.

In Pécs, a man received a 12-year prison sentence for an attempted murder plot involving the Zsolnay Mausoleum. The defendant had rigged the metal gates with electricity in an attempt to kill people. He was also convicted of multiple thefts, including Zsolnay porcelain, and drug possession.

Other notable legal matters include a man in Oradea, Romania, being held in pre-trial detention after allegedly intentionally striking a sex worker with his vehicle while driving under the influence. In Budapest, a man was arrested for storing 21,000 e-cigarettes and 5,000 packs of illegal cigarettes in a container, causing a significant loss to the state budget. Additionally, legal proceedings continue regarding a fatal traffic accident in Debrecen and a case involving a woman accused of failing to provide assistance after a pedestrian accident in Békéscsaba.
