Szeged researchers discover new macrophage immune response mechanism

Researchers at the Szeged Biological Research Centre have identified a new mechanism regarding how macrophages, fundamental elements of the innate immune system, respond to conflicting molecular signals.

Traditionally, macrophages undergo polarization driven by opposing cytokines: interferon-gamma (IFNγ), which promotes antimicrobial and anti-tumor responses, and interleukin-4 (IL-4), which aids tissue regeneration but can also contribute to tumor progression and allergic inflammation.

The study, published in the journal ‘Nucleic Acids Research’, reveals that when macrophages encounter these two opposing signals simultaneously, they do not simply cancel each other out. Instead, they trigger a unique, intermediate gene regulation program that leads to the coordinated and enhanced activation of specific genes. This discovery provides a more precise understanding of macrophage behavior in pathological environments, which may have implications for treating asthma and various types of cancer.
