Szeged tests new air conditioning for older trams

The Szeged Transport Company (SZKT) has begun testing a new air conditioning technology designed specifically for older tram models, such as the Tatra series, which previously could not be retrofitted without extensive structural modifications.

Unlike traditional systems that require the installation of air ducts and additional rooftop equipment, this new solution fits into existing roof windows. The system operates independently, automatically activating when the tram starts moving, and requires only a connection to the standard 600-volt power supply.

SZKT noted that previous attempts to air-condition older models were unfeasible because the necessary components lacked space on the vehicle roofs. If the current pilot program proves successful, the company may decide to equip more of its older fleet with this technology to improve passenger comfort during heatwaves.
