Szelment celebrates 10th anniversary of Avenue of Olympians

The tenth anniversary of the Avenue of Olympians and Sports Champions was celebrated in Szelment on September 4. Since its establishment in 2017 at the Provincial Center for Sport and Recreation in Szelment, the avenue has grown to include 125 commemorative plaques and seven obelisks.

During this jubilee edition, 11 prominent figures of Polish sport were honored with new plaques. The honorees represent a diverse range of disciplines, including athletics, canoeing, triathlon, badminton, boxing, volleyball, cycling, judo, and race walking. Notable recipients include four-time Olympic champion Robert Korzeniowski, Olympic silver medalist in judo Antoni Zajkowski, and Olympic vice-champion in whitewater canoeing Klaudia Zwolińska.

The ceremony also featured the unveiling of an obelisk dedicated to Wojciech Fortuna, an Olympic champion and co-creator of the avenue, as well as a sculpture titled ‘Olimpijczyk’ (Olympian) symbolizing athletic determination.
