Szentendre residents protest construction in Tófenék green zone
Residents and environmental activists in Szentendre are protesting a new construction project in the Tófenék green zone. The development involves heavy machinery and the transport of large quantities of soil, which locals claim is disrupting the area's tranquility and threatening the local deer population during their mating season.
Critics and environmental groups argue that the construction has fenced off a critical hundred-meter green corridor, severing natural wildlife routes. Public figures, including television presenter Judit Endrei, have voiced opposition to the narrowing of wildlife habitats.
Szentendre Mayor Zsolt Fülöp stated that while the municipality is aware of the complaints, their legal options are limited. He noted that the local government actively works on environmental initiatives, such as rewetting former Danube floodplains, but the current construction is taking place on a specific plot within a larger agricultural area, which he suggests allows deer to bypass the site.
