Hungary and Romania roll out major local transport and public‑space upgrades

From July 27 to August 28, 2026, track work on the Gyékényes‑Vízvár rail line will be carried out, with MÁV buses substituting trains and the line’s speed slated to rise to 80 km/h after 2027 upgrades. In Budapest’s Újpest district, the third phase of the István út and Pozsonyi utca reconstruction is under way, delivering new road surfaces, upgraded bus stops, refreshed sidewalks and newly marked bike lanes. Nearby Szentendre is installing updated cycling signs and parking layouts on Ady Endre út to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists along the EuroVelo 6 route. In Romania’s Szilágynagyfalu, construction continues on a modern medical centre, a new nursery and the full restoration of the historic Bánffy Castle, reflecting years of preparation and regional support. Meanwhile, Nagyenyed (Cluj) has secured nearly €10 million in EU funding for a green mobility corridor, adding over five kilometres of bike paths, renovated sidewalks, Park‑and‑Ride facilities with electric‑car chargers, improved lighting, and a comprehensive overhaul of the city’s central park to enhance livability for its roughly twenty‑thousand residents. These projects collectively aim to modernise transport infrastructure, boost public safety and raise quality of life across the two countries.
