Sziget Festival celebrates renewed freedom in post-Orban Hungary

The Sziget Festival in Budapest is experiencing a period of renewed openness following the political shift in Hungary. Following the April victory of pro-European leader Peter Magyar, which ended sixteen years of rule by Viktor Orban, festival organizers report a more tolerant environment. Tamas Kadar, head of the organization, noted that officials have engaged with the festival on practical matters like transport and health services without the “headwinds” experienced under the previous administration.

As a long-standing “Island of Freedom,” the festival continues to emphasize its commitment to diversity and LGBTQ+ rights. The Magic Mirror venue remains a central hub for queer performers and audiences. This year’s programming includes diverse acts such as the House of Circus troupe, which combines drag and circus arts to promote creative self-expression and inclusivity in a space that remains significant for marginalized communities.
