Sziget Festival reports lower attendance and financial losses
Sziget Festival founder Károly Gerendai has described the 2024 event as a “watershed year” following lower-than-expected attendance and financial results. While the festival attracted between 350,000 and 360,000 visitors, this was a notable decrease from the 416,000 attendees recorded last year.
Financially, the festival faced significant challenges. Under previous owner Superstruct Entertainment, the event saw a loss of 2.8 billion forints last year. Organizers aimed to reduce this to 1.5 billion forints this year, but targets were missed. Gerendai attributed the higher-than-expected losses to a four-month delay in organization and ticket sales, a strengthening forint making the event more expensive for international visitors, and local weather conditions.
Despite the financial setbacks, Gerendai stated that the strategic decision to focus on development rather than cost-cutting will lay the foundation for future growth. The festival concluded with a headline performance by Skrillex. Looking ahead, Super Early Bird tickets for the 2027 festival are scheduled to go on sale starting August 24, offering discounted rates for registered attendees.
