Székelyudvarhely faces financial losses from failed grant applications

During a 35-item municipal meeting, the Székelyudvarhely local council addressed significant financial losses resulting from failed grant applications and administrative errors. Mayor István Szakács-Paál reported that the city inherited a 25 million lei deficit and highlighted two specific projects that caused substantial waste.

First, a small-scale producer incubator house project resulted in a loss of approximately 1.5 million lei. Although the city decided to withdraw from the project in 2023, the formal administrative steps to cancel the application were not completed, leaving the task to the current administration. Second, funding for the renovation of the Dr. Palló Imre Arts Lyceum failed due to an error where documentation was submitted for vocational training instead of theoretical education, rendering the project ineligible.

Regarding infrastructure, the Anghel Saligny program was modified. Due to accounting issues and land expropriation delays, Kisköved tér and the upper section of Ugron Gábor utca were removed from the package. They will be replaced by investments in Sósfürdő, Borsairét, and Küküllő utca. Additionally, the council approved a project for Bükkfa utca, which will receive a 5.5-meter wide roadway, new sidewalks, and a drainage system for over 1 million lei. The city is also applying for funding to establish two solar parks.
