Szolnok waste management dispute erupts over landfill redirection

A dispute has emerged between the city of Szolnok and the waste management company Mohu MOL Hulladékgazdálkodási Zrt. regarding the redirection of municipal waste. Mayor Mihály Györfi accused the company of arbitrarily diverting 10,000 tons of waste from the Kétpó landfill to the Cegléd landfill, a decision made with only one week's notice. The Mayor warned that this move could lead to waste accumulating in city bins for days or weeks and claimed the decision was politically motivated.

Mohu responded by stating the redirection is a professional process optimization based on legal obligations and national interests rather than local politics. The company maintains that the change aligns with existing contracts and is intended to ensure uninterrupted waste collection in the Szolnok region. However, the sudden shift has caused logistical issues, with reports of garbage trucks being unable to offload waste due to the Cegléd facility being unprepared for the increased volume.
