Szolnok water restrictions tightened to protect drinking supply
The Central Tisza Water Management Directorate (Kötivizig) has implemented additional water restrictions in the Szolnok region to safeguard the drinking water supply for approximately 100,000 residents. These measures involve suspending or strictly limiting water withdrawals for purposes other than drinking, public health, and disaster management.
The decision follows a continuous decline in the water level of Lake Tisza, driven by extremely low water inflow from the upper reaches of the Tisza River. Previous restrictions introduced on August 9 failed to achieve sufficient water savings to ensure long-term stability.
Authorities noted that while these administrative restrictions do not directly impact the general population's daily usage, they are necessary to maintain the water levels required for the Szolnok and Eastern Main Canal systems. Further emergency measures will be considered if the water level at the Kisköre weir drops to 610 centimeters.
Separately, low water levels in the Danube have also enabled water management authorities to recover significant amounts of waste, including municipal refuse, tires, and metal scraps, near the Kopaszi-gát and Rákóczi Bridge in Budapest.
