Szépművészeti Museum hosts major Paul Gauguin exhibition
The Szépművészeti Museum in Budapest is launching a major exhibition titled “Bonjour Monsieur Gauguin – A posztimpresszionisták és szimbolisták körei.” The showcase features 150 masterpieces, including 80 works by the French Post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin.
This exhibition marks a significant cultural event for Central and Eastern Europe, as it is the first large-scale Gauguin retrospective in the region. The collection includes 32 works from the museum’s own holdings, alongside pieces loaned by approximately 40 international institutions, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Musée d’Orsay, Van Gogh Museum, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.
Curated by Judit Geskó, the exhibition explores Gauguin’s life and artistic network. In addition to Gauguin’s work, visitors can view pieces by influential contemporaries and predecessors, including Gustave Courbet, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Paul Sérusier, and Émile Bernard.
