T-34 tanks in the history of the Vietnam People's Army

The T-34 tank has played a significant role in the history of the Vietnam People's Army since its official arrival in 1960. Originally provided through Soviet aid in 1959, which included 15 T-34 tanks and several self-propelled guns, the equipment helped facilitate the establishment of the 202nd Armored Regiment.

Despite being considered older technology compared to the T-54 tanks that arrived later, the T-34 remained a vital combat asset. In 1970, the 397th Tank Battalion, consisting of 33 T-34 tanks, was ordered to move from Vinh Yen to the Quang Tri battlefield. After a four-month march along the Truong Son trail, these tanks participated in the 1971 Route 9 - South Laos campaign, where they were used to support infantry in attacking strategic high ground.

Over nearly 70 years, the T-34 has been utilized in various capacities, including national defense, international duties, and border protection. The Vietnam People's Army also conducted research and improvements on these vehicles to support maritime sovereignty and other specialized missions.
