T. J. Hughes scores preseason hat trick to challenge for Avalanche roster spot
Colorado Avalanche forward T. J. Hughes has intensified the competition for a final roster spot following a standout preseason performance. Hughes recorded a hat trick and an assist during a 5-2 preseason victory over the Winnipeg Jets at Ball Arena.
Head coach Jared Bednar noted that Hughes has shown continuous improvement throughout training camp. During the game, Hughes was tested at center alongside Gavin Brindley and Jaden Schwartz, a tactical shift intended to spark engagement within the lineup. While Hughes has primarily played on the wing during camp, his performance in the slot and his high-level playmaking ability have made him a significant factor in upcoming roster decisions.
The Avalanche face a difficult choice as the preseason concludes. Hughes, an undrafted 24-year-old, is competing against Gavin Brindley for a position on the opening night roster. Brindley enters camp with the advantage of NHL experience, having played 56 games in the previous season, but Hughes’ recent offensive surge has complicated the coaching staff's decision ahead of the September 30 season opener against the Los Angeles Kings.
