T-Mobile and Jio connect two 5G SA networks for roaming

T-Mobile and Jio have successfully demonstrated the first connection between two independent 5G Standalone (SA) networks for roaming purposes. Unlike traditional 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) roaming, which relies on a 4G core, this achievement utilizes 5G core infrastructure for both networks.

To ensure secure communication and interoperability between the different operators, the project utilized Syniverse and the Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP), a component defined within the 5G architecture to protect signaling traffic.

Beyond providing faster mobile roaming for travelers, this interoperability is significant for the development of international Internet of Things (IoT) applications, latency-sensitive services, and cross-border business systems. The demonstration highlights the necessity of enabling different 5G SA cores to communicate securely as the technology moves from national implementations to a global ecosystem.
