T-Mobile and Jio launch world’s first 5G Standalone roaming

T-Mobile and Reliance Jio have achieved the world’s first 5G Standalone (SA) roaming connection. Enabled through interoperability with Syniverse’s connectivity platform, the milestone allows travelers to access native 5G SA services across international borders rather than relying on legacy 4G LTE-based architectures.

Unlike Non-Standalone networks that depend on 4G LTE cores, 5G Standalone operates on a dedicated 5G core. This architecture supports advanced capabilities such as network slicing, lower latency, higher speeds, and improved reliability for IoT and real-time communications. The implementation utilizes Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP) technology provided by Syniverse to ensure secure signaling and interconnection between the two networks.
