T-Mobile Network Outage Disrupts Service for Hundreds of Thousands Across the US
A nationwide outage at T-Mobile began around 4:30 p.m. ET on July 27 2026, quickly overwhelming the carrier’s monitoring service Downdetector. Within an hour the platform logged more than 62 000 reports, and the total number of user reports later rose above 140 000, spanning major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Denver and Washington, D.C.
Many customers saw their phones switch to “SOS” or “SOS Only” mode, meaning normal calls could not be placed while emergency calls remained possible. T‑Mobile acknowledged the issue on X, stating that engineers were working to resolve the problem. By late evening the company announced that service had been fully restored for all customers and issued an apology.
During the outage some users reported that the carrier’s T‑Satellite service, which uses SpaceX’s Starlink satellites, did not connect, prompting questions about the satellite backup’s reliability. T‑Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan had previously said the satellite service would complement, not replace, cellular coverage. The exact technical cause of the outage was not disclosed.
