Taça AF Setúbal match suspended after assault on assistant referee

A Taça AF Setúbal football match between Olímpico do Montijo and Cova da Piedade was suspended in the 43rd minute due to an assault on an assistant referee. The incident occurred when a trash can was thrown from the stands, striking the official in the head.

At the time of the stoppage, Cova da Piedade held a 2-1 lead. Earlier in the match, Santiago Furtado had scored for Montijo in the 17th minute, followed by a penalty from Luís Leal in the 37th minute and a subsequent goal by Hugo Sousa for the visiting side.

Both clubs released statements regarding the event. Clube Olímpico do Montijo issued an emergency communique repudiating the violence, stating that such behavior is an unacceptable violation of sporting ethics and regulations. Cova da Piedade also released a statement noting they are awaiting decisions from the relevant authorities.
