Taa Wongbe praises former Liberian President George Weah

Nimba County District 9 Representative Taa Wongbe has sparked political debate in Liberia after offering rare public praise for former President George Weah. Despite being a vocal critic and political opponent of Weah and his Congress for Democratic Change party, Wongbe credited the former leader for his football legacy and, notably, for conceding the closely contested 2023 presidential election.

Wongbe noted that the discussion arose following Liberia’s 3-1 loss to Rwanda in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. He shared that conversations with ECOWAS colleagues in Ghana regarding Liberian football eventually turned to Weah’s political transition. Wongbe emphasized that his comments are not an endorsement of Weah’s presidential record, but rather a recognition of his decision to accept a runoff defeat to current President Joseph Nyuma Boakai by 20,567 votes.
